GLUTEUS MINIMUS : 1 of 3 Gluteal (Glute!) Muscles!

Your Glutes are located in your "buttock region" - your buns! butt! bum! booty - I could go on!  Together they help to stabilize your core (strong buns = good posture! well - a good start to stabilization anyway ;)

Today we'll focus on the smallest and deepest of the Glute muscles:

Gluteus Minimus



Gluteus Minimus Muscle Attachment Points:

ORIGIN: On the posterior surface of the ilium (hip bone) --- more specifically "between the anterior & inferior gluteal lines" * (see pic below)


INSERTION :  Anterior border of the Greater Trochanter of the Femur 




Fun fact ! : Notice how the shape of this muscle is triangular - just like the Deltoid muscle of the shoulder! Gluteus Minimus has 3 different fiber directions just like the Deltoid muscle of your arm! Therefore the actions are quite similar - pulling the femur (thighbone) in multiple directions!

Gluteus Minimus lives posterior (closer to back of body) and next door to TFL.

Gluteus Minimus Muscle ACTIONS:

The entire muscle (all fiber directions together) ABDUCT the thigh at the hip joint
The Anterior fibers assist in:  FLEXION & MEDIAL ROTATION of the thigh @ the hip joint



The Posterior fibers assist in EXTENSION & LATERAL ROTATION of the thigh @ the hip joint.


LATERAL ROTATION of Thigh @ Hip Joint
(aka external rotation)
